Описание:
The Picture of Dorian Gray tells the story of a handsome young man, whose full-length portrait was painted by an artist infatuated by Dorians beauty. Fearing that his beauty will fade, Dorian expresses the desire to sell his soul, to ensure that the picture will age and fade while he remains youthful and lives a life of sin and pleasure...

On its first publication The Picture of Dorian Gray was regarded as dangerously modern in its depiction of fin-de-sicle decadence. In this updated version of the Faust story, the tempter is Lord Henry Wotton, who lives selfishly for amoral pleasure; Dorians good angel is the portrait painter Basil Hallward, whom Dorian murders. The book highlights the tension between the polished surface of high society and the life of secret vice. Although sin is punished in the end the book has a flavour of the elegantly perverse.

The Picture of Dorian Gray, Oscar Wildes only full-length novel, is the enduringly eerie story of a naive and irresistible, young man lured by decadent Lord Henry Wotton into a life of depravity. Though Dorian is steeped in sin, his face remains perfect, unlinea1 as years pass-while only his portrait, locked away, reveals the blackness of his soul. This timeless tale of Gothic horror and fable, reveling in the unabashed hedonism and cynical wit of its characters, epitomizes Wildes literary revolt against the proprieties of the Victorian era. Sharing this volume with The Picture of Dorian Gray are Wildes clever and sophisticated story Lord Arthur Saviles Crime and two of his delicate fairy tales, The Happy Prince and The Birthday of the Infanta.
