The Beautiful and Damned, first published in 1922, is F. Scott Fitzgeralds second novel. It explores and portrays New York caf societу and the American Eastern elite during the Jazz Age before and after the Great War and in the early 1920s. As in his other novels, Fitzgeralds characters in this novel are complex, especially with respect to marriage and intimacy.
Summer 1970 - a long, hot summer. In a castle in Italy, half a dozen young lives are afloat on the sea of change, trapped inside the history of the sexual revolution. The girls are acting like boys, and the boys are going on acting like boys, and Keith Nearing - twenty years old, a literature student all clogged up with the English novel - is struggling to twist feminism and the rise of women towards his own ends. The sexual revolution may have been a velvet revolution (in at least two senses), but it wasnt bloodless - and now, in the twenty-first century, the year 1970 finally catches up with Keith Nearing. The Pregnant Widow is a comedy of manners and a nightmare, brilliant, haunting and gloriously risque. It is the most eagerly anticipated novel of the year and Martin Amis at his fearless best.
The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgeralds third book, stands as the supreme achievement of his career. In planning his novel, F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote, I want to write something new something extraordinary and beautiful and simple and intricately patterned. Working with anxiety and saw he feeling that it was the supreme test, he committed all his imaginative resources to the project. This exemplary novel of the Jazz Age has been acclaimed by generations of readers. The story of the fabulously wealthy Jay Gatsby and his love for the beautiful Daisy Buchanan, of lavish parties on Long Island at a time when The New York Times noted gin was the national drink and sex the national obsession, it is an exquisitely crafted tale of America in the 1920s.
Walter Scott (1771-1832) was a Scottish historical novelist, poet, and playwright. Although he was an advocate and legal administrator by profession, Scott is most famous for his great literary works and activities in the Royal Highland Society. The Monastery is a historical novel that takes place during the Scottish Reformation in the middle of the sixteenth century. The wonderful love story between three heroes, Glendinning boys, and Mary Avenel, closely intersects with events in the country that threaten the very existence of the Monastery of Kennaquhair.

From its first publication in 1817 Rob Roy has been recognized as containing some of Scotts finest writing and most engaging, fully realised characters. The outlaw Rob Roy MacGregor was already a legendary, disputed figure by the time Scott wrote - a heroic Scottish Robin Hood to some, an over-glamorised, unprincipled predator :o others. Scott approaches Rob Roy indirectly, through he adventures of his fictional hero, Frank Osbaldistone, imid the political turmoil of England arid Scotland in 1715. With characteristic care Scott reconstructs the period and settings so as to place Rob Roy and the Scotland he inhabits amid conflicting moral, economic and historical forces. This edition features, besides a new critical introduction and extensive explanatory notes, an essay outlining clearly the novels historical context and a glossary of Scottish words and phrases used by Scotts colourful, vernacular characters. Полный, неадаптированный текст произведения.
